Looking After Your Lid

A good lid should age with you. Unlike your everyday clothing, a well-made hat doesn't need regular washing. Your lid can go through hundreds of wears, adventures and good times before it needs a proper clean.

The best way to help your favourite hat last for years is to be a little kinder during its life. The less you wash it, the longer it'll keep its shape, colour and character.

General Care

  • Spot clean where possible using cold water and a small amount of mild detergent.

  • Treat marks and stains sooner rather than later.

  • Air dry naturally in the shade. Avoid direct heat or dryers.

  • Store your hat out of prolonged sunlight to help reduce fading.

  • If your hat gets soaked at the beach, gently rinse it with fresh water, reshape it, then allow it to dry completely in the shade before storing. Dry the buckle with a soft cloth to help minimise oxidation.

Washing Your Lid

If your hat needs more than a spot clean:

  1. Fill a sink or bucket with cold water and add a small amount of mild detergent.

  2. Wash one hat at a time, particularly darker corduroy colours, as some fabrics may release a small amount of dye.

  3. Gently work the water through the fabric with your hands. Avoid scrubbing aggressively, twisting or wringing the hat.

  4. Rinse thoroughly with cold water.

  5. Pat dry with a towel, reshape the crown and brim, then leave it to air dry in the shade.

  6. If you'd like to speed up drying, you may use a hair dryer on the cold air setting only. Hold it approximately 20–30 cm from the hat and keep it moving. Never use warm or hot air.

  7. Once dry, wipe the buckle with a soft cloth before storing your hat to help minimise oxidation.

Do Not

  • Machine wash.

  • Tumble dry.

  • Use bleach or harsh chemicals.

  • Iron your hat.

  • Dry clean.

Genuine Copper Hardware

Most Bird & Hill lids features genuine copper hardware. Like all genuine copper, it may develop a patina over time from moisture, sweat, salt air and regular wear. This is a normal characteristic of genuine copper and adds to the unique character of your lid.

If your hat has been exposed to salt water, rinse the buckle with fresh water and dry it thoroughly before storing to help minimise oxidation.

Please note: We recommend spot cleaning only for white or lighter-coloured hats with contrasting darker interior tapes or fabrics, as these materials may occasionally transfer colour during full washing.
